As people age or engage in high levels of physical activity, the body's natural ability to repair damaged tissues gradually declines. Within the musculoskeletal system, this condition often leads to degenerative diseases and chronic injuries—such as osteoarthritis of the knee, foot, and ankle joints; biomechanical abnormalities; and tendon injuries—which directly affect an individual's mobility and quality of life.
Amid the advancement of medical science, regenerative medicine has emerged as one of the fastest-growing fields, focusing on the restoration and regeneration of body tissues through science-based approaches, including the use of stem cells and secretome.
As part of its commitment to improving public health literacy, National Hospital, in collaboration with Mandiri Prioritas, Mandiri Sekuritas, and Regenic, organized a public education event titled "Regenerative with Stem Cell & Secretome for Better Movement and Better Living" at Vasa Hotel Surabaya.
The event featured two National Hospital specialists, dr. Amaranto Santoso O., Sp.PD and Dr. dr. Henry Ricardo Handoyo, Sp.OT-CF(FA)., M.Biomed., M.H., C.M.C., C.C.D., who provided insights into the role of regenerative therapy, the importance of biomechanical correction, and the management of chronic diseases to support healthy aging.
According to Dr. dr. Henry Ricardo Handoyo, Sp.OT-CF(FA), Orthopedic and Traumatology Specialist Consultant in Foot and Ankle at National Hospital, regenerative medicine serves as a valuable complement to modern orthopedic practice.
He explained that the lower extremity joints—including the hip, knee, ankle, and foot—serve as the primary foundation for body movement. Therefore, when injuries or structural abnormalities occur, treatment should not only focus on pain relief but also on restoring proper alignment and biomechanical function.
In this context, stem cells and secretome have emerged as promising biological therapies that may help support tissue recovery. However, their application must always be based on comprehensive clinical evaluation, appropriate indications, ethical and medico-legal considerations, and adherence to evidence-based medicine. He also emphasized the importance of early prevention through movement and posture assessments, appropriate footwear selection, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
This medical approach is further strengthened from the perspective of systemic health. dr. Amaranto Santoso O., Sp.PD, Internal Medicine Specialist at National Hospital, emphasized that healthy aging is not merely about extending life expectancy but ensuring individuals remain active and productive. The success of regenerative therapy as well as orthopedic treatment is greatly influenced by overall health conditions, making it essential to maintain proper control of metabolic diseases, adequate nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to medical perspectives, the event also featured Rino Alfian (Head of Surabaya Branch, Mandiri Sekuritas) and R. Bintang Permana Putra (Regional Sales Head, AXA Mandiri Region 8 Java 3), who shared insights on the importance of healthcare and financial planning in preparing for the future.
Through this strategic collaboration, National Hospital hopes the public will gain an accurate understanding of the latest medical innovations and be encouraged to make informed healthcare decisions based on appropriate medical consultations to maintain long-term quality of life.
