Preparing to welcome a baby is not solely about the delivery process itself. It also involves the physical, emotional, and educational readiness of parents to care for their newborn. In many families, newborn care practices are passed down from older generations such as grandparents. However, not all traditional practices align with current health and medical standards.
Some newborn care practices may pose risks to a child's growth and development later in life. To address this, National Hospital, in collaboration with Gaia Academy, recently organized an educational event for expectant parents, providing comprehensive information on childbirth preparation and newborn care practices.
Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Hendera Henderi, Sp.OG, MHPM, explained that anxiety before childbirth is a common experience among pregnant women. However, unmanaged anxiety can negatively affect both maternal and infant health.
"Proper childbirth preparation begins during pregnancy. Regular prenatal check-ups, understanding changes in the body, and developing a well-planned birth strategy can help reduce anxiety while increasing the likelihood of a safe and comfortable delivery," said Dr. Hendera Henderi.
According to him, most childbirth complications can actually be identified during pregnancy through routine prenatal screening. Therefore, pregnant women are encouraged to attend regular antenatal check-ups, understand the signs of labor, and know when to seek immediate medical attention.
In addition to medical preparedness, family support plays a crucial role during labor and delivery. Appropriate support from a partner has been shown to help mothers feel calmer and more confident when facing contractions and the birthing process.
Meanwhile, Midwife Elly emphasized the importance of educating first-time parents about newborn care. She noted that many parents feel anxious when it comes to bathing their baby, caring for the umbilical cord, or recognizing conditions that require medical attention.
"Newborn care can actually be carried out with confidence when parents have the right knowledge. Simple practices such as keeping the umbilical cord clean, understanding the signs of a healthy baby, and recognizing warning signs in newborns can help prevent unwanted complications," explained Midwife Elly.
During the educational session, participants also received hands-on training in newborn bathing techniques, safe swaddling methods, and basic daily newborn care. Expectant parents practiced these skills directly using baby dolls prepared for the workshop.
In addition to newborn care, the program highlighted the importance of the postpartum period as a critical stage of recovery for mothers after childbirth. Adequate rest, balanced nutrition, family support, and postnatal follow-up visits are essential factors in maintaining maternal health and well-being.
