Heart palpitations are often considered a minor issue and are commonly perceived as a normal response to fatigue, stress, or caffeine consumption. However, this condition can be one of the symptoms of arrhythmia, a heart rhythm disorder that requires further evaluation, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness or fainting.
During the Health Talk: Heart Palpitations? Know When to Be Concerned!, National Hospital cardiologist dr. Gunawan Yoga, Sp.JP, explained that the symptoms of arrhythmia vary from person to person. The most common complaint is heart palpitations, which may be experienced as a very rapid heartbeat, forceful pounding in the chest, or heartbeats that can even be felt in the ears.
"Most arrhythmias are benign. However, some cases can be potentially dangerous and may increase the risk of sudden cardiac death if left untreated," said dr. Gunawan Yoga.
According to him, people should consult a doctor immediately if they experience heart palpitations accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, cold sweats, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fainting, particularly if these symptoms interfere with their daily activities.
In addition, dr. Gunawan also recommends medical evaluation for individuals with a history of heart disease, those who have undergone heart surgery, or those with family members who have experienced sudden cardiac death, especially at a young age.
To help establish an accurate diagnosis, National Hospital provides a range of diagnostic examinations, including Holter ECG, which continuously records the heart's rhythm for 24 to 72 hours while patients carry out their normal daily activities. The hospital also offers an Electrophysiology Study (EP Study) to evaluate the heart's electrical conduction system, as well as a treadmill test to help assess the risk of heart rhythm abnormalities during physical activity.
"Because heart rhythm disorders do not always occur during routine examinations, selecting the appropriate diagnostic test is essential to accurately identify the underlying cause of the symptoms," explained dr. Gunawan.
Furthermore, he added that advances in cardiology have made it possible for several types of arrhythmias to be treated effectively, including through catheter ablation for patients with appropriate indications.
With comprehensive diagnostic facilities and a team of experienced cardiologists, National Hospital is committed to providing comprehensive care ranging from screening and diagnosis to the treatment of arrhythmias. Through early detection and appropriate management, the risk of serious complications caused by heart rhythm disorders can be minimized, helping patients maintain a better quality of life.
