Kawasaki Disease: A Serious Condition Affecting Children

Kawasaki disease is an illness that typically affects children, particularly toddlers under the age of 5. It is a form of inflammation that occurs in the blood vessels. If not treated promptly and properly, this disease can lead to severe and permanent heart complications.

What Are the Warning Signs of Kawasaki Disease?

The condition is characterized by:

  • High fever lasting 5–14 days
  • Redness in both eyes
  • Red rash appearing all over the body
  • Swelling of the palms and soles
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

The Main Threat: Impact on the Heart

Kawasaki disease can affect the coronary blood vessels—the vessels responsible for supplying blood to the heart muscle. Inflammation may weaken the walls of the coronary arteries, causing them to enlarge or bulge, a condition known as an aneurysm.

Dangers of an Aneurysm:

  1. Increased risk of blood clots, which can block arteries and cause a heart attack
  2. Potential rupture, leading to internal bleeding
  3. Long-term damage to the heart muscle and valve problems

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek immediate medical attention if your child has a high fever for several days along with one or more symptoms of Kawasaki disease. A doctor will diagnose the condition based on clinical symptoms. To confirm the diagnosis and assess the heart’s condition, several tests may be performed:

  • Blood Tests

These check for signs of inflammation such as elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP).

  • Echocardiography (Heart Ultrasound)

This is the most important test to examine the coronary arteries and detect the presence of aneurysms.


If your child experiences any of the symptoms listed, immediately contact a pediatrician or go to the emergency department. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, most children recover fully without long-term issues. However, delayed treatment can lead to fatal outcomes.
